Submissions open for Royal Shakespeare Company PILOT Sites

The Royal Shakespeare Company and PILOT Nights would like to invite contemporary theatre makers creating sited and outdoor work to submit proposals for the second ever PILOT Sites, taking place in the public and outdoor spaces of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and surround, in Stratford-upon-Avon.
RSC PILOT Sites will take place on the afternoon of Midsummer’s Day, Sunday 21 June, and form part of the RSC’s annual Midsummer celebrations featuring live music, workshops and activities for all the family.

Building on the inaugural PILOT Sites which took place at Birmingham Hippodrome in May 2014, the RSC PILOT Sites will give theatre makers a platform to show untested extracts of new work in front of a lively, supportive crowd for the first time, interpreting and responding to the beautiful and historic architecture and environment that make up the RSC’s home.

We would like to see new performance ideas that respond to this sense of place, Midsummer and are suitable for a family to enjoy together.  We are also interested to see links to Shakespeare, but work should avoid using Shakespeare’s text in a literal sense and focus instead on using his words, characters or stories as a starting point for a new idea.

The performance can be up to 20 minutes in length and the application should indicate your preferred (type of) space, and maximum audience numbers. Please note, due to the nature of the event, we are particularly interested to receive proposals for ideas that will work for audiences of 25 or more.

The spaces include:

  • outdoor – gardens and terraces
  • indoor – foyers
  • indoor – bar spaces
  • indoor – Tower top
  • indoor – Fountain staircase

A contribution of £500 will be made towards expenses for each selected new piece of work.  In addition, each artist/ company will be able to access the following, in addition to the financial contribution:

  • A site visit with relevant members of the RSC team, on 20th April
  • Access to appropriate RSC staff to offer creative support for the development of the work
  • A day’s workshop with an RSC voice and text practitioner
  • Film and photograph documentation of the work

Applications should be submitted via the PILOT Sites application form accessible here, via email by 12 noon on Thursday 2 April.

If you would like to discuss your proposal before submitting an application, please contact Louisa Davies, Events Manager at the Royal Shakespeare Company on 01789 272367 or email louisa.davies@rsc.org.uk
